Youth Council

The Syracuse Youth City Council is a volunteer group of youth ages 14 to 18We currently have 24 council members. The Council's advisors are Sydney Hawkes and Julie Robertson.

Involvement: YCC volunteers its service in a variety of ways. A few examples are:

  • Antelope Drive Clean-Up (twice a year) - cleaning up the roadside between 1000 and 2000 West along 1700 South

  • Easter Egg Hunt - filling eggs and supervising at the City Easter Egg Hunt

  • Heritage Week - helping with Heritage Days activities, including a youth dance, a senior brunch, the parade, and games for kids at the carnival

  • Haunted House - hosting a child-oriented haunted house every October, during the City's Pumpkin Walk, to collect money and canned food donations for the Utah Food Bank

  • Poinsettia Sale - selling poinsettias each November to raise  money for a Sub-for-Santa project to help families in the community

  • Meet the Candidates Night - hosting a question-and-answer session with the candidates running for City Council

  • Leadership Conference - attending a leadership conference every Spring to improve the council members' skills in leading, serving, and working as a group

  • Other - The YCC is ready and willing to help with anything that arises. For example, members served as Capitol Ambassadors during the State Capitol Rededication in January 2008

Responsibility: While serving the community, Council members learn responsibility through specific assignments they carry out, both individually and as a group, and attending a minimum 80% of all meetings and activities as well as being on time. Leadership Members also learn to be leaders. The Council is led by its members, with the assistance of the two advisors. Those who attend regularly, and  actively participate, are given the opportunity to serve as YCC mayor. The leadership conference (listed above) helps build leadership skills, too.

Why Join? Being a part of the SYCC is fun! It's an opportunity for teenagers to spend time with others their age. The members learn leadership skills while making a difference in the community. It also looks great on a resume'. For more information, contact the City Offices. For an application, click here.
